In 1946, he was arraigned before court in what was known as the Malmedy Massacre Trial. The former military capo was arrested and sent to a jail in the United States. Peiper gained notoriety in 1944 after leading a number of Waffen-SS soldiers to murder 84 United States Army officers who were captured during the war. He also commanded a Waffen-SS tank during that period. The following year, he was moved to the rank of SS-Mann and became a full member of the SS unit in 1935.įour years later, during WWII, he became the personal assistant to Heinrich Himmler who was then a leading member of the Schutzstaffel military group. Four years later, he became a member of Nazi Party’s Hitler Youth before joining the Schutzstaffel (SS) in 1933. Joachim Peiper thought of becoming an army officer at the age of 14 when he joined a boy scout in Germany.
